United complete academy raid, confirm Karim Cassim signing from City
Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of highly-rated youngster Karim Cassim, with the 17-year-old midfielder completing his move across Manchester after leaving rivals Manchester City’s academy.
The confirmation
United announced the deal directly, with the club’s statement reading simply that they had “agreed the signing of exciting youngster Karim Cassim,” noting that the England youth international had joined after leaving City. The move follows weeks of the deal being effectively done behind the scenes, with United said to have finalized terms some time ago and simply been waiting on Premier League ratification before it could be made official — approval which has now landed.
Who is Karim Cassim?
Cassim, born September 12, 2009, is a central midfielder who’s been shaping up as one of City’s more promising academy products. He was part of the City side that lifted the FA Youth Cup last season, and on the international stage he’s already featured for England at Under-17 level — including starts in all three of the side’s European Championship qualifiers against the Faroe Islands, Israel and Estonia back in March. Reporting from The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell suggests United’s recruitment staff view him as a box-to-box midfielder with a genuine pathway toward senior football.
He was even spotted watching United’s U18s take on Charlton Athletic back in August — a fairly strong hint that the move was already all but agreed well before it became official this week.
Part of a bigger pattern
Cassim isn’t an isolated pickup. United are also said to be closing in on two further teenage signings: David Eze, a 16-year-old defensive midfielder also being taken from City’s academy, and Isaac Konde, a 16-year-old winger arriving from Liverpool. Both are reportedly being brought to Carrington with development toward the first team in mind, mirroring the club’s approach with Jack Fletcher and Tyler Fletcher — two previous City academy arrivals who both went on to make their first-team debuts for United last season.
There’s an interesting subplot here too: United’s technical director previously ran City’s academy set-up, giving the club a level of insight into which young players might be open to a move rather than staying in City’s famously crowded development pipeline. The logic being floated is straightforward — sign the promising kids now, rather than watch them develop elsewhere and pay a much larger fee for the finished product years down the line.
Not all good news on the academy front
The Cassim arrival comes with a sting in the tail, though. United are reportedly fighting to hold onto JJ Gabriel, a 15-year-old considered one of their most prized academy assets, who has formally requested to terminate his contract in order to become a free agent. His camp are said to have already opened talks with both Barcelona and Real Madrid, meaning United could lose a highly-rated prospect of their own at the same time as bringing others in.
What’s next
Cassim is expected to be involved with United’s academy setup after the September international break, beginning life at Carrington with a first taste of his new club’s youth fixtures. For now, it’s a straightforward pickup in the ongoing tug-of-war for teenage talent between Manchester’s two clubs — with United, on this occasion, coming out ahead.
