Rio Ferdinand Tells Michael Carrick to Change His Mind on Man United Teenager Now

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has once again used his platform to challenge Michael Carrick’s team selection, this time zeroing in on how the head coach is handling young defender Ayden Heaven. With United off to a shaky start defensively in the 2026/27 Premier League season, Ferdinand believes it’s time for Carrick to rethink his centre-back pairing and give the teenager a consistent run in the side.

A Defence Under Scrutiny

United have picked up just one win from their opening three league matches, a run that includes a heavy defeat to Hull City and a draw against Everton. More alarmingly, the Red Devils have already shipped six goals in those three outings, a statistic that has put the back line squarely in the spotlight. Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw have all featured at various points, but the leaky nature of the defence has fans and pundits alike questioning whether Carrick is fielding his strongest options.

It’s against this backdrop that Ferdinand has spoken out. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former England international pointed to the club’s summer business as evidence that United’s hierarchy already sees Heaven as part of the long-term plan. Alongside the arrival of Leny Yoro, the club invested in Heaven specifically to strengthen that area of the pitch, and Ferdinand feels the teenager’s game time so far doesn’t reflect that investment.

Ferdinand’s Argument

Ferdinand’s central point is straightforward: if United spent money bringing in Heaven, he should be trusted to start regularly rather than rotate in and out of the lineup. The pundit has suggested that either Heaven or Yoro should be a fixture in the heart of defence, rather than United continuing to lean on more experienced but error-prone pairings. Heaven did start in the opening-day loss to Hull alongside Maguire, but was left out for the win over Ipswich and the draw with Everton, with Martinez preferred instead.

For Ferdinand, that inconsistency is part of the problem. Young defenders, in his view, need continuity to settle into a team and build understanding with those around them — something that’s hard to achieve when selection keeps shifting week to week.

The Bigger Picture at Old Trafford

This isn’t the first time this season that Ferdinand has questioned Carrick’s decision-making. He has also been vocal about United’s need for further reinforcements up front, arguing that the club should still be looking at proven goal-scorers to support their attack. Taken together, his comments paint a picture of a pundit who believes Carrick has the raw materials for a strong United side but isn’t yet arranging them in the right order.

Carrick, for his part, inherited a squad in transition and has generally received credit for the attacking football his side has produced early in the campaign, with United proving more than capable of scoring goals. The concern, as Ferdinand and others have pointed out, is that those attacking performances are being undermined by defensive frailties that could cost points against tougher opposition later in the season.

What Happens Next

With United’s next fixtures offering a chance to address the defensive concerns, all eyes will be on whether Carrick heeds the advice of one of the club’s most decorated former defenders. Whether he turns to Heaven more regularly or sticks with his current setup, the pressure is mounting for United to tighten up at the back — and Ferdinand has made clear he doesn’t think that happens without giving youth a real chance.
