Manchester United’s summer of squad announcements took an unexpected turn this week when academy forward Gabriele Biancheri was confirmed to be leaving the club for Austrian second-division side FC Wacker Innsbruck — just one hour after he had appeared on United’s own website as part of the club’s registered Premier League squad for the 2026-27 season.
From Squad List to Farewell in the Same Afternoon
On Thursday, United published its official list of registered players for the new campaign, with Biancheri’s name included among the group. Remarkably, within an hour of that announcement going live, the club confirmed a completely different outcome for the 19-year-old: a permanent move away from Old Trafford.
United’s statement on the transfer was brief and cordial, confirming that Biancheri had agreed to join the Austrian 2. Liga club on a permanent basis, subject to the usual registration formalities, and wishing him well for the next stage of his career.
The timing raised eyebrows among fans, given how unusual it is for a club to list a player in its official squad announcement only to confirm his departure almost immediately afterward.
A Prolific Underage Record
Biancheri arrived at United’s academy from Cardiff City back in February 2023 and quickly built a reputation as one of the club’s most productive young forwards. He closed out the 2023-24 season with an impressive return of 17 goals in 27 appearances, and continued to feature prominently at both under-18 and under-21 level the following season, netting 15 times in 36 league matches for the under-21s.
Looking to gain senior experience, he spent the first half of this year on loan at then-League One club Rotherham United, making 11 appearances during his spell at the New York Stadium. He also had a taste of first-team football back at Old Trafford, appearing in a pre-season friendly against Altrincham. According to reporting from The Sun, though, his route into United’s senior squad was seen as effectively blocked, prompting the move to Austria.
He’s now set to make his bow for Wacker Innsbruck as soon as this weekend, with the club due to face BW Linz in the second round of the Austrian Cup.
International Interest From Two Countries
Away from club football, Biancheri has attracted attention on the international stage from both Wales and Canada. He was called into a Wales training camp last year by manager Craig Bellamy ahead of World Cup qualifying fixtures against Liechtenstein and Belgium, but chose instead to accept an invitation to train with Canada.
Canada boss Jesse Marsch has been notably complimentary about the teenager, drawing a comparison to the nation’s all-time top scorer, Jonathan David. Marsch described Biancheri as a forward capable of playing on the shoulder of the last defender while also dropping deeper to link play, and noted that he’d had positive discussions with the player and his family as they weigh up which country he ultimately wants to represent — adding that Canada hopes the family feels a strong connection to the setup.

For now, Biancheri’s next chapter begins in Austria’s second tier rather than in the Premier League. Whether the move proves to be a stepping stone back to a higher level, or the start of a longer career away from England, will depend on how quickly he can adapt to senior men’s football outside the academy system that shaped him.
