Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Liverpool’s highly rated 16-year-old academy winger Isaac Konde, in a deal set to be confirmed with Liverpool receiving a compensation fee for the switch.

United complete academy coup on rivals

Manchester United have struck an agreement to bring Isaac Konde across from Liverpool, a move being described as a significant coup for the Old Trafford club, with the teenager choosing to leave Merseyside to continue his development in Manchester. Konde has been training with Liverpool since he was an Under-9 player, and the transfer is expected to involve a compensation payment to his current club as a result.

The deal, reported by Fabrizio Romano, will see Konde swap Merseyside for Manchester, with the winger having already progressed rapidly through Liverpool’s youth ranks. He had not yet turned 17 but was already a regular fixture in Liverpool’s Under-18 squad. Once the move is finalised, Konde will join United’s own youth setup and will be looking to make an immediate impact under Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher.

A rare crossing of the divide

Deals between Manchester United and Liverpool are historically uncommon given the intensity of the rivalry, which makes this one of the more eye-catching academy transfers of the window. Reports have generally described Konde as a midfielder in the build-up to his move, though scouts see his greatest strength as his versatility — able to operate centrally, drift to the left flank, or push further forward. Since his promotion to Liverpool’s Under-18 side, he featured in six matches and contributed an assist, playing predominantly as a wide midfielder despite a stated preference for playing as a winger. Those who have watched him closely point to his close control, composure under pressure, and directness when running at defenders as the traits that stand out.

Part of a wider youth push

The Konde deal appears to be part of a broader strategy from United to recruit the country’s best young talent, with the club reportedly also closing in on Manchester City pair David Eze and Karim Cassim, both 16-year-old central midfielders. United’s pursuit of Konde has also been linked to Arsenal’s success in signing two other highly rated academy prospects, James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye, a loss United appear keen to offset by strengthening their own intake elsewhere.

Contract structure

According to reporting from The Athletic, the move won’t see Konde sign senior forms immediately. Instead, given his age, he’s expected to sign an initial one-year scholarship deal with United, before being eligible to sign a longer-term professional contract — reportedly running for a further five years — once he turns 17.

The bigger picture at United

The Konde deal comes amid a summer in which United’s hierarchy have prioritised youth recruitment at first-team level too, with the senior midfield reshaped by the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. That investment in the middle of the park has, however, left some observers questioning the balance of the squad, with defensive reinforcements — particularly at left-back, where Luke Shaw remains the only recognised senior option — seen as a lower priority this window.

For Liverpool, losing a player they’d developed since the age of nine to their fiercest rivals will sting regardless of the compensation fee involved, and it continues a pattern this summer of big clubs raiding each other’s academies rather than just the traditional route of poaching from smaller feeder clubs.

United are expected to formally confirm the signing once the paperwork on Konde’s scholarship terms is finalised.
